Chocolate cysts, also known as ovarian endometriomas, are a type of ovarian cyst seen in some women with endometriosis.
The objective of this surgery is to completely remove the ENTIRE cyst wall, peeling the cyst wall off the ovary, and preserving the remaining ovarian tissue.
The laparoscopic procedure strips the cyst wall – the portion of the cyst containing the endometrial tissue. The benefits of this procedure include decreased recurrence rates, increased chance of spontaneous pregnancy, and a significant reduction in pelvic pain.

Rupture can result in severe internal bleeding, shock, and, rarely, death of the woman.
